Nandi Senator Simon Cherargei is now calling for an overhaul in the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ Serious Crime Unit.

The lawmaker was making the proposal following the dragging of investigations into the death of Jeff Mwathi.

Jeff’s case has sparked an online debate, with netizens calling for justice for his family.

The 23-year-old died after falling off the window of renowned Kikuyu artiste DJ Fatxo’s house.

Cherargei claims the Serious Crime Unit should be professional and proactive, and should not wait for social media uproar to open investigations into such cases.

“The family of the late Jeff Mwathi needs justice now for their son. DCI should ensure speedy investigations & arrests are made. We need to do an overhaul of the entire serious crime unit(SCU) of the police to become more professional & proactive without social media campaigns to do their job!” he tweeted.

The outspoken lawmaker’s suggestion comes moments after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki instructed DCI to expedite investigations into Jeff’s death.

DCI takes over Geofrey Mwathi’s death probe

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over the probe to establish the manner in which Jeff Mwathi died after public outcry.

In a statement on Friday, March 10, DCI said the new move follows a directive from the agency boss Mohamed Amin.

“Detectives from the Homicide department based at DCI Headquarters, have this morning taken over investigations into the death of 23-year-old Jeff Mwathi, from Kasarani police station.

“This follows a directive by the Director of Criminal Investigations Mr. Mohamed Amin, for the expeditious investigation into the death of the young man.

“The public is assured that no stone shall be left unturned in the investigation of this case and any person found to have been involved in the death shall face the full force of the law,” DCI said in the statement.
